Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 810 women die due to pregnancy and childbirth. Between 2000 and 2017, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR, 305 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births) fell by approximately 38% worldwide, 94% of all maternal deaths occurring in low and middle income countries. Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia accounted for about 86% (254,000) of the estimated global maternal deaths in 2017. Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounted for about two-thirds (196,000) of maternal deaths, while South Asia accounted for nearly one-fifth (58,000). Overall, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in developing countries has decreased to just under 50% (WHO, 2017).
Comprehensive midwifery care (Continuity of Care/CoC) can optimize the detection of high maternal and neonatal risks. This effort can involve various sectors to carry out assistance to pregnant women as a promotive and preventive effort starting from the time a pregnant woman is found until the mother in the postpartum period ends through counseling, information and education (IEC) as well as the ability to identify risks in pregnant women so that they are able to make referrals (Yulita , 2019).
